The Annex Painting By Sarah Rushing Doss
When the BAC wanted someone to capture the heart and vision of The Annex, Sarah Rushing Doss was the natural choice. Her bold and expressive work and her love of architecture brought this piece of art to life.
Originally from Clinton, North Carolina, Doss moved to Wilmington to attend UNCW majoring in Studio Art and English. Her parents lit the creative fire in her early to be an artist. Taking classes with local artist Pam Toll was the catalyst for her current involvement in No Boundaries International Art Colony on Bald Head Island. Sarah and her husband, James, also own Rx Restaurant & Bar here in Wilmington. In their free time and during some restaurant construction, they purchased two school buses to renovate: one into a camper and the other into a food truck.
"We're working on the camper first and hope to head out west to do some skiing before it's time to reopen in the spring," Doss said.
Inspired by plants, animals and interesting perspectives, Doss is a painter and muralist and loves drawing on any surface.
BAC owner Jay Tatum commissioned Doss to paint The Annex and she found inspiration in the historic architecture and a local photographer’s photo.
“I just loved the photo taken by Matt Ray that I selected to use as a reference for the painting,” Doss said. “The composition is fantastic and the perspective is unusual, which is what I’m typically drawn to when painting architecture.”
The large 3' x 4' painting is adorning a wall in the second floor of The Annex and looks like it was made for that space. The BAC has made it a focus to showcase local artists and find it's an important component of it being called an arts center.
"I think it's commendable that you guys are supporting so many local artists in the community as well and feel fortunate to be among them," Doss said. "The BAC is such a great anchor for the Brooklyn Arts District and I have enjoyed every bit of time I've spent there.”
