Story by Danielle Naurayan
Six years ago, Paige McKenzie and Derek Kon were transfer students at the University of North Carolina Wilmington when they met through mutual friends. Paige has transferred from a school in Greensboro to study marketing and Derek had transferred from Worcester, Massachusetts, to major in finance. Over time, as they became more serious about their relationship and knew they were going to spend their lives together, they chose to wait for financial stability before sharing their vows.
Derek is a huge Red Sox fan, so when he completed his MBA program, Paige wanted to surprise him with a trip to Boston to see a game together. Little did she know that he had a surprise in store for her! After the game, when nobody was around, they Derek asked her to be his wife, and Paige said, “Yes.”
“I know everything about him. I can finish his sentences, and he can finish mine, and I believe that is the beauty of it. We are absolutely best friends.”
On June 11, 2011, more than 140 family and friends helped them celebrate their marriage, held along the waterway in the backyard of a private property on Summer Rest Road in Wilmington. The reception took place in the Brooklyn Arts Center at St. Andrews.
“Everything about that day turned out perfect in our eyes! I loved the entire process of working with Jennifer with Salt Harbor Designs. I didn’t want an all-white wedding, so Jennifer introduced me to a combination of ivory and navy blue. She designed the whole thing—our invitations, menus, place cards, and flowers—and she did a great job.”
Their fabulous night ended with the traditional sparkler sendoff, but Paige wanted to give Derek one more surprise first. The caterers of A Southern Thyme served popcorn and Crackerjacks from a Boston Red Sox-themed snack tray on the sidewalk outside BAC.
Paige and Derek flew to Costa Rica for their honeymoon, where they traveled inland to see the volcano, Arenal. The newlyweds are continuing their life together in Wilmington, where Derek works as an underwriter for Wells Fargo, and Paige is the director of marketing for Mayfaire Towne Center.
